@test 1 :)@joined max's #onboard call and built a little "fire spitting" orpheus, you can control the intensity with a potentiometer on the back. i'm working on getting the board to use Fr4 material in the fire part so the led light can shine through :)@spent an incredible weekend in New York for #horizon !!! I loved coding with and mentoring the girls scouts and can’t wait to fully ship our experience together :)@Day 10 of #hardware-party :roo-yay:
Started working on the frame / physical map portion of the project!! I’m not done yet so I’ll be continuing on the project beyond the 10 days :) @Day 9 of #hardware-party :roo-yay:
Running a little behind schedule but I have acquired a new pico (thank you secret santa at hq!) and continued working on the code for controlling the lights! I also finally got the aeronautical map that I’ll be connecting the lights to! @Day 5 of #hardware-party :fb-wow:
Today is an example of why NOT to try doing hardware things while you're really tired :((( it was a cool learning experience though!
My lights are WS2811 LEDs and they require 12Vs, so i found a 12v power supply for my lights, I also connected my lights directly to my pico (both the ground and data pin one) — which was powered through microusb from my laptop. When i plugged in the power, the board immediately heated up and started smoking, burning a small part of my index finger... I plan to still finish up the code & wiring but will need to wait for a new pico to actually test it! and to prevent this next time, i'll be using a breadboard + adding resistors for all connections from the lights to the pico.
a tribute to my pico, i'm sorry:salute:
tldr; plan ahead for different voltages or you'll fry your pico like i did :dead:@Day 4 of #hardware-party :roo-yay:
Soldered more LEDs and also got the IR sensors working :))
@Day 3 of #hardware-party / WHW :roo-yay:
Got another cable and it worked so I loaded micropython & appropriate base code to control the leds onto the pico :) I also cut, soldered, and wired my ws2811 lights! However, i wasn't able to test it because the lights need 12v and i was planning on powering it with the 5v output from the pico... i'll try to buy a barrel connector plug tomorrow to hopefully resolve this issue!
Also, since i was already soldering, i helped my mom fix one of our lights!! :)@Day one of the Winter Hardware Wonderland :roo-yay:
For the next 10 days, i'm attempting to build an interactive sectional map with live weather data ☁️ (check out my proposal <https://github.com/hackclub/winter/blob/main/bellesea.md|here>)
This is my first full hardware project so i'm super excited!!! We're not off to a great start as I ran into some trouble connecting to my pi :( However, while we're figuring that out, I already started learning micropython and also read up on how to set up the IR sensors, which will serve as "hands off buttons" to toggle between different modes.
The core of the project is displaying weather data through different coloured LEDS. I have some WS2811 LEDS that will serve as the lights for each of the airport locations and show the local weather data w/ different colours so I planned out the specific airports i'll be adding lights to + the order in which it'll be linked. I'm working off a fork of github.com/prueker/METARMap.
Below is a much much fancier version of what i'm trying to make...@finishing day 10 of #10-days-in-public with a lecture on flight planning! did not reach my original goal of finishing the entire lecture series but i'm definitely still going to be going through it :) to celebrate this being the last day, here's 3 cool things i learned:
• all runways are bi-directional and named after the angle/bearing so runway 180 is also runway 360 :) and you take off against the direction of the wind (it hits the nose of the plane first) so a runway working both ways allows pilots (instructed by the air traffic controller) to pick a direction depending on the weather.
• planes are louder when they take off than when they land because they use more power to initially get the plane in the air
• from 18,000 to 60,000 feet above sea level, the pilot must have an instrument rating and fly under instrument flight rules which basically means using data from your flight instruments to navigate rather than using your eyes haha, and that's because you have lowered visibility
(bonus: it's possible to safely land a plane even if your engine stops working because you're able to glide, and how far you can travel while gliding depends on your glide ratio)@learning about the human factors of flight!
day 9 of #10-days-in-public 🛩️@Still on the chapter about aircraft systems :) currently learning about the engine system!
Day 8 of #10-days-in-public @Learning about aircraft systems!
Day 7 of #10-days-in-public @started the chapter on flight controls from the pilot's handbook of aeronautical knowledge :)
day 6 of #10-days-in-public@to revise/recall what i've learned thus far about planes, i started drafting notes/mindmaps from memory and looking up things that i realised i forgot :))@didn't make that much progress today with the lecture series, still on the same lecture about aircraft performance :)) i did learn a cool/fun fact about flying planes though, most of the time, headwind is better than tailwind because at the right angle of attack (angle of your plane relative to the wind), it helps generate greater lift :)
day 4 of #10-days-in-public@continuing on with the lectures for day 3 of #10-days-in-public :)) looking at factors that affect how a plane performs :roo-yay:@took a break from the lecture series to learn about aircraft structures and composition from the book "pilot's handbook of aeronautical knowledge" 🛩️
day 2 of #10-days-in-public@hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave: for the next 10 days, i'm going to learn more about airplanes and flying by completing a private pilot ground school course and maybe some other things ✈️
source: www.youtube.com/watch?v=alLh1Jdqwvg&list=PLUl4u3cNGP63cUdAG3v311Vl72ozOiK25&index=10
specifically, today i learned about how to communicate with control towers and how to get weather data while you're flying :))
day 1 of #10-days-in-public@pose detection now works!! wasn't able to reach the final product in 10 days as originally hoped but i'll try to keep posting updates to #scrapbook as i complete the project :)
day 10 of #10-days-in-public@gave the site a fresh coat of paint and also made small tweaks to make the code run better! unfortunately i wasn't able to figure out how to make it detect a phone from a significant distance :( however, i looked into pose estimation and i think i'll be able to implement this instead! blog.tensorflow.org/2018/05/real-time-human-pose-estimation-in.html
day 9 of #10-days-in-public@did not make progress on the image capture thing but worked with @msw to change the extruder for the 3d printer :3d-printer: at the office :) it was super cool and i definitely want to explore more hardware projects!!
we followed this guide if anyone's curious: e3d-online.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4565871722397-Revo-Micro-Prusa-Mini-upgrade-guide-Edition-2-
day 8 of #10-days-in-public@it takes screenshots!!! the next step is to try and find a better object detection model so that it can recognise people (and phones) from far away or find a way to programatically zoom in on people. also, figure out a way to get this hooked up to a camera (and maybe raspberry pi) so that it can run :)
day 7 of #10-days-in-public@was able to implement the checker for whether someone was holding their phone :)) ran into a bit of a snafu though... it doesn't do well at a long distance :flushded: so i spent a significant amount of time trying to look for models trained specifically to identify objects from a distance 🤞
day 6 of #10-days-in-public@OMG IT WORKS!! finally figured out how to get the data and the position data of the object too :) the next step is to write a checker that returns whether both a phone and person are in an image and whether the position of the phone is above 1/3 the height of the person... i was also able to read up on how to trigger a screenshot :)
day 5 of #10-days-in-public
(i'm grinning in the photo because i can finally see how the project might come to fruition!!)@decided to use this pre-trained object detection model and managed to get it to run :roo-yay: but now trying to figure out streaming from webcam and accessing data from the model!
Day 4 of #10-days-in-public@i think i semi figured out a plan of approach! i'll be using object detection to check for where people are in the video and whether a phone exists. if both cases are true and the phone is more than 3/4 above height of the person, we'll take a screenshot. github.com/tensorflow/tfjs-models/tree/master/coco-ssd
day 3 of #10-days-in-public@Finished the tensorflow tutorial and also tried (unsuccessfully) searching for a dataset to train the model on! Was initially planning on posting something work+ related because today was incredibly busy but the chaotic video from max, caleb, and ella gave me much needed motivation!
(found the summary below really useful to keep in mind moving forward)
2/10 of #10-days-in-public@hiii :hyper-dino-wave: i'm working on a thing that will recognise when people raised their phones to take photos and take a photo of them first :) to start, i'm learning tensorflow with their tutorial: codelabs.developers.google.com/codelabs/tfjs-training-regression/index.html#0
1/10 of #10-days-in-public@gamelab.hackclub.com/?id=8f414923a88d35132b830d0475a5a97d@learned the 6502 assembly language today! thank you to @jakeadler for sharing this link (skilldrick.github.io/easy6502), it's amazing!@continued learning about the cpu and worked on a diagram to *TRY* explaining what i understand :))@learning about the cpu! it's really fun but my brain hurts and i have so so much more respect for all the hardware hoomans :salute:@Learning Svelte today (have always wanted to ever since the workshop)!@Hey Fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
Today was pretty awesome!! The late nights are finally catching up to me so today after school, I fell asleep on the couch haha :)) Did not work on any projects today but I continued on with active recall prep for my business exam! Also, my school celebrated earth day by making all of us do some sort of self-written song/dance number and umm, it was really funny but really embarrassing too haha! Hope you have an amazing day!
(i really like this song!!! also, i find it really cool that more pop songs are releasing mandarin versions)@hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
hope your week is going well!! today my school had an optional wellbeing day for "exam students" where we had yoga, hiking, breathing exercises sessions etc. and it was pretty awesome!! the most interesting thing i learned was how to let go of thoughts that are unproductive... like if i'm working on smth and suddenly start worrying about another thing, that doesn't do me any good so i can just let that thought go. also, worked on updating the hack club team page today and did some business exam prep by doing active recall of different units!
(umm not sure what photo to add so here's a ss of this week's notion to do list page, i make a different cover each week and this week i felt like i needed some peace and magic)@hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
i did more volleyball today and now my body is EXTREMELY sore :(( but completely worth it haha! also, i had a decently productive school day and just spent the last 5 hours wrangling with css even though i should have been studying for my exams :roo-yay:
(idk what image to add so here's a photo of my sister's hamster)@Hey Fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
Today was pretty awesome!! Didn't get as much studying done but i got to hangout w/ my friends and play volleyball (had a free period so went to the gym to play around w/ the volleyball and even though i didn't ask, the pe teacher offered to train me which made it more fun). Also, worked on updating an existing web project (took longer than expected). ANDDDD i finally listened to alec benjamin's new album... so good!!! Hope you have a great day :)
(look at this album cover adfhkjsdhfs and the incohesiveness of this scrapbook represents my current mental state :flushded:)@hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
i finally finished the first part of my econ exam prep(!!!)...now it's onto practice :)) also, worked on documentation for toriel :blobattention: – this was my first time making a slightly large change to the documentation of a project and it was surprisingly hard :flushded:. i really enjoyed it tho and it forced me to become a lot more comfortable w/ markdown which is a cool skill to now have hehe. hope y'all have an awesome day!!!@hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
today i worked on more econ prep (my favourite part was learning about the eu in context of a monetary union, customs union, and common market like who knew the eu had soo many layers). also, semi stalked wellesley college forums and the ENTIRE site :flushded:. didn't really code much today and i'm getting more stressed about the fact that i have exams soon :(( hope y'all have an awesome day and happy easter to anyone that celebrates 🥚!!
(here's a random map of the eu lol also)@hey fwens 👋
today i studied for my economics exam and also unsuccessfully wrangled w/ paper.js (trying to add an interactive animation type thing to the workshodle built during @heyrajan's workshop)!! i'm gonna try working on it again tmr :roo-yay: hope you have an amazing day!!@hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
almost forgot to do today's :sadge: i had a really nice chill morning and started working on @pranav's annoying site challenge :)) also, i set up a local version of toriel (only took 3 hours no biggie) and it was really interesting learning to read error messages :errors: + how to set a slack bot haha :)) i had an amazing day and hope y'all do too!!!@hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
today i dealt with a bunch of college stuff (finally committed to a school and responded to all offers – good luck to my fellow seniors making your decisions these few weeks!!). also, had a few calls and worked on more past papers :)) and... i continued w/ the web security class by feross! so far, i really like it!
(some more planets lol)@hey fwens 👋
hope your day is going well!!! today i worked on more past papers (i really enjoyed today's maths questions hehe) and also started breakthecode.tech/game (thank you @nzeng for sharing it in #lounge)... i'm very lost but trying to stumble my way through haha!@hey fwens 🌊
today i worked on math and business past papers + continued econ research :)) also, i started reading the vulnerable world hypothesis and it's really really interesting! it brings up and explores the idea of a "black ball" invention :)) hope you have a great day!@hey fwens :wave-pikachu:
hope your week is off to a great start! today I worked on more past papers (what's new :blobcosy:) and did some projects work :)) also, i touched up an old illustration project!
(a small section of said illustration project)@Hey fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
Today was an amazing day! Watched a little more criminal minds and also touched up on an old design project and maintained an existing website :)) Did not do any maths past papers today... instead, I was doing econ exam preparations and finding real-world examples for different topics that we learned! Hope y'all have an amazing day :yay-toitle: .
(also, i'm kinda happy that i'm more regularly committing stuff to GitHub :blobhypedance: )@Hey fwens :partyparrot_wave1:
Hope you're enjoying your weekend!! This morning ☀️, I attended the Feross AMA hosted by @pranav and it was sooo much fun! Feross is insanely cool haha... like he just builds things he's interested in and tries to test the limits of technologies he uses :)) Also, I worked on more maths past papers and created an abomination for the annoying website challenge... I think a piece of my soul died :ratcap:. Hope you have an amazing day :blobcosy:!@hey fwens 👋
i had a really nice chill day today :) watched an embarrassing amount of criminal minds :flushded: and now know wayy too much about serial killers. Besides that, i also watched lectures from cs 253 web security by feross (can't wait for the ama w/ him tonight).
hope y'all have a great day!@hey fwens :wave-pikachu:
hope your day is going amazing! today i did math past papers and had a really exciting meeting for a project that i'm working on :)) also, i figured out some adulting stuff like rent and making meals and stuff :flushded:.
(attached is the design i created for the ama w/ feross – i'm so excited for the event!!)@hi fwens :hyper-dino-wave:
hope your day is going well hehe! i'm gonna try daily scrapbooking :eyes_squint: to make sure i do at least one thing that i'm proud of each day :) today i had a really nice chill morning with my sister and did exam prep for maths, business, and chemistry :roo-yay: – relieved i remember a decent amount haha. also, worked on a small graphic design thing :blobattention:
(attached is a separate design thing i played around with for the replit hackathon but it was really off brand so never implemented it haha)@finally started tinkering w/ gamelab!@late but weeeeeeeeeeeeee :)@going through class slides to prep for chem finals on monday :sadge:@woohoooo! i got my ticket for an event i probably can't attend cuz of timezones :sadge:@got through wednesday :))@worked on my personal website :)) decided on color scheme 💙@working through this javascript course :)) also, my supervisor checked the first submission of my extended essay and liked it, yay!@the paper is going somewhere :)) 1/4 done ✅ just sent it to my ee supervisor to get feedback!@started on my extended essay :))) very happy with how it's turning out!@just finished a lab report :))@following the next js starter tutorial@working on my personal website...@prepping for a chem test - this is only one of 4 slide decks :))@learned about advanced css selectors from the one and only freecodecamp yee :))@didn't do anything but still waiting to be rickrolled ✨@finished reading the wind up bird chronicle by haruki murakami :))@finished a scholarship application and submitted it 🤞@spring break ended and I went to school in person today also, read the wind up bird chronicle... the quote was me today @worked on practice questions for my economics class :))@worked on practice questions for my economics class :))@went through part of the swift ui tutorials today :))@took a break today :)) and while watching a video lecture, i got distracted and drew a random dinosaur@worked on a short paper for business :))@day 2 streak of using freecodecamp :))@back on this site :))@Doing some reading :))@starting a scrapbook streak again to motivate me :)) today, i took a html quiz on w3school and worked on some logo designs@😔@Finally learned SQL today through the cs50 SQL seminar :))@Currently reading this after completing @gabruharsh244’s Help Orpheus workshop :))@I just watched the social dilemma and it made me so uncomfortable ( and that doesn't fully describe it ) 😔
Biggest takeaway:
We are being manipulated to change our thoughts without us knowing: the algorithms are really good at showing us what we are interested in so they only show that, and you only ever see 1 side of the story and they can slightly tweak the narrative each time and show you more extreme versions of a story until you believe that is what you believe in@Following @fayd’s workshop on a responsive nav bar :))@trying to navigate the hack club github ( see what it's about )...@copied another illustration... getting better at comfortably using illustrator :))@Followed this tutorial to create by own discord bot today ;))@worked on a little smth :))@;-;@It's only Tuesday but I am so ready for this week to be over...@copied another illustration... feeling much more comfortable with layers :))@more adobe :)) ( traced one of the netflix profile icons ) also shipped it 😳@😳@Eeeeee 👀 stickerssss, thanks @minderella and @Chay@worked more on the website today :))@shipped for the first time today :))@I love notion. period.@worked on this today :))@I can't rn...@It's my friend's birthday today :))@preach@finally doing this again...@have been listening to this album on repeat for the past 2 weeks... obsessed!@At today's training session, we ended with 2 x 500, 5 x 200,10 x 100 ; my soul :)))@just realised that my scrapbook is turning into a meme page@eee@learned to use adobe illustrator today...@finally started :))@preach@period.@👀@my go to cheatsheet for transformations :)))@going back to school tmrr@do y'all use Quizlet? if so, do you create ur own?@has anyone taken this course? thoughts?@back to it :))@maths class essential@going to try this book...@:confusedparrot:@:among_us:@:)))@worked on a website :)) this sums up my experience@spent the day watching manhunt: unabomber ( it was fantasticcc )@love this book@online school killin me bruhh...@:ultrafastparrot:@ummm... ok.@more homework but this was a cool prompt :))@worked on a website today... there is a bug somewhere and i can't find it...@did a little more designing today... i love canva 💖@for the streak...@yay.. more school work :))@the UI is so pretty...@Thank you @christina695 for sharing the link to the recording... it was a great webinar!@eee@school...@🤨@on track :js:@:)))@is anyone here familiar with CTF?@getting a headstart of christmas celebrations 🎄@don't know what next.js is but excited to find out :))@back to it...@back to learning javascript :))@this series is pretty good :))@just wanted to highlight the importance of mental health... haven't been in the best place but getting better.
